Grave
of the Fireflies has been ranked as one of the greatest war films of
all time and is also recognized as a great work of Japanese
animation.Seita and Setsuko house was destroyed in a firebombing.
Two
siblings escaped from that place and their mother was dead in that
firebombing. Seita hides this news from her sister because he doesn’t
want to see her sister sad. Later on, they move into their distant
aunt’s house. They were fully dependent on their aunt because they don’t
have any money and were also contactless with their father. His father
was also an Imperial Japanese Navy Caption. His distant aunt convinces
him to sell his mother’s silk but Setsuko argues while selling her
mother’s silk. That aunt becomes resentful towards them and deems them
unworthy of earning her food.
They
decided to leave their aunt’s house after excessive insults, they move
into an abandoned bomb shelter. Setsuko already heard the news that her
mother’s death after knowing that Setsuko heard the news both of them
cried hardly. After seeing them, I also cried thinking how painful to
lose my mother at a very young age.
They
don’t have anything to eat. Setsuko became sick day by day though they
don’t have money to consult with the doctor. Seita starts stealing due
to hunger and her sister is suffering from malnutrition. While going to
steal Seita got bitten and also taken to the police station. The most
painful part is Setsuko went to the police station and asked her
brother” your body got hurt is it paining “? then he tightly hugs her
sister and both of them cried. I cried while seeing them.
Seita
withdraws all the money from his mother’s bank account. After doing so
he heard that Japan has surrendered and that his father is also dead.
Seita returns with food but finds her sister is dying. Seita cremates
Setsuko’s body and her stuffed doll in a straw casket. He carries her
ashes in the candy tin along with his father’s photographs.
At the end of World War II, Seita dies of starvation at a Sannomiya train station surrounded by other malnourished people.
